As you might expect, there are many different types of insurance in Germany.
Germany has a variety of different insurances for all kinds of unlucky situations. Not all of them might be necessary or useful for everyone, but there are certain policies, which are highly recommended by independent institutions, such as the Union of Insurance Customers.
Which insurances are required by German law?
Some insurances are actually required by law, such as the car liability insurance (Kfz-Haftpflicht) or health insurance (Krankenversicherung). Others might be necessary in certain situations: For example, the general private liability insurance (Haftpflichtversicherung) is always recommended, because it protects you from your possible financial ruin in case of a misfortune with the most serious consequences, as you are liable to unlimited amounts for all damages you cause anyone in Germany. When taking a loan for a house, banks usually require a life insurance (Lebensversicherung) in order for the loan to be secured.
Health insurance supplement insurances
Especially for your health insurance, there are multiple optional supplement insurances, which provide you with better treatment quality (e.g. better dental implants / inlays) or more comfortable treatments in hospitals (e.g. your private hospital room and treatment by a chief physician/surgeon).

A small mishap and you will be liable for the full amount of the damage.
With our liability protection, we protect you from the financial consequences, for example if the vase falls down in the shop, your child runs into the street and causes an accident, or if you accidentally damage a piece of furniture as a moving helper.
Home contents insurance (Hausratversicherung)
What is covered by home content insurance in Germany?
Home content insurance covers damage to your belongings caused by:
- Fire
- Lightning
- Storm
- Water damage
- Burglary / theft
If your belongings are damaged or lost, you can make a claim and your insurance will pay out the cost of replacing the item. It doesn’t matter what you paid for the item originally, the claim will be enough to purchase an equivalent item at today’s prices. Your insurer might also pay out the cost of repairing the item.
Home contents insurance doesn’t cover your belongings for deliberate damage or wear and tear. It also does not apply in the following circumstances:
- Accidental damage caused by guests or pets
- Damage or loss outside the home
